Avnet strengthens down under

Australia : American multispecialist Avnet has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire all of the outstanding shares of VAD itX Group Limited (itX), in an all cash merger valued at €52.5m. The acquisition is subject to the approval of itX's shareholders, Australian court approval and other customary conditions for a transaction of this type. itX distributes software, hardware and services from the world's leading suppliers including Oracle, IBM, HP, VMware, Apple, Citrix, Red Hat, and Trend Micro. In addition, itX includes Briell Marketing, a distributor of specialized printers and media for personal identification and security cards, medical and photographic imaging; Sydmed, a distributor of medical devices; and ICO, which provides IT hosting solutions. With approximately 150 employees, itX has offices in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Canberra and Adelaide. For fiscal year ended June 30, 2009, itX generated revenue of approximately €100m.

Empa makes move on enterprise channel

MEA : broadliner Empa has revealed ambitious plans to crack the enterprise space in a move that it admits is bringing about a "cultural change" within its organisation. Although Empa's heritage lies in components distribution, the company has just formed a dedicated Enterprise Solutions business unit that will largely focus on the SMB market. So far it has signed partnerships with antivirus software provider ESET, Sweden-based anti-spyware specialist Lavasoft and Citrix-ready web filtering appliance vendor St. Bernard Software. It will also focus on the systems and storage portfolio of Fujitsu Technology Solutions, which it already has a relationship with. Empa says the scope of the unit will extend to software, security, storage, systems and networking solutions. The unit is being led by Sathya Murthy, who previously worked for Tech Data, Novell and more recently Magirus, where he managed the company's VMware business (source : ITP Middle East).

Rebranded SDG plans acquisitions

United Kingdom : value-added broadliner SCH has united its distribution brands (ETC, Interchange, Interface Solutions and IQ Sys) under the SDG banner, in a move it claims will allow it to retain its specialist edge following its acquisition spree. SDG head Paul Eccleston also said the distributor, in order to keep a chance to survive on the long term, given the grip the major American distributors (Ingram, Tech Data, Avnet and Arrow) exert in Europe (source : Computer Reseller News United Kingdom).

Logicom to distribute Hitachi hard drives

Logicom has moved to expand its storage portfolio by signing a distribution agreement with Hitachi Global Storage Technologies for Bulgaria, Cyprus, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Romania, the Middle East (through Logicom offices in Dubai, Jordan, Lebanon and Saudi Arabia) and Turkey. The partnership - which comes less than a year after Logicom split from Seagate - will see the distributor offer Hitachi GST's hard disk drives and external storage products to channel customers around the region (source : ITP Middle East).

Trinity targets channel expansion

Middle East : PC components and peripheral specialist Trinity Middle East has appointed Anwar Al Atyani as its new sales and marketing director for the region. His main objective is to help Trinity expand its business in the MEA region by identifying new channels and enlarging its sub-distribution network.
